Drake spoke on “USPTO Patent Quality Initiative.” The presentation addressed the efforts that the United States Patent & Trademark Office (“USPTO”) is making to ensure quality patents issue. She provided some background of the Patent Quality Initiative and then discussed several aspects of the Patent Quality Initiative that may have the most impact on patent practitioners and patent applicants including the clarity of the record pilot program and training, the review data capture process, evaluation and usage of quality metrics at the USPTO, the sharing of information on post-grant outcomes, and ways to get issues addressed at the USPTO.
“It is encouraging to see that the USPTO continues to seek feedback from the public on issues affecting patent quality, such as through the monthly patent quality webinar chats that are open to the public,” Drake said. “While we are still in the early stages of implementation of the Patent Quality Initiative, I am optimistic that we will see improvements in patent quality through some or all of the USPTO efforts.”
