Drake speaks at the 240th American Chemical Society National Meeting
Kirby Drake, Senior Associate at Klemchuk Kubasta LLP, spoke at the 240th American Chemical Society National Meeting in Boston, MA.
The American Chemical Society is the world’s largest scientific society. At the meeting, there were over 10,000 chemists and chemical professionals in attendance. Drake gave two presentations over the course of the weeklong meeting.
Drake’s first presentation, entitled “Food for Thought – The Potential for Food Patenting,” was given to the Agriculture and Food Chemistry Division. This presentation provided a comparison of the pros and cons of patent versus trade secret protection in the food context. The presentation also weighed those pros and cons related to specific examples of food patents and further discussed a few recent lawsuits relating to food patenting.
She also gave another in-depth talk given the title of “Protecting Trade Secrets in the New Economy.” This was presented to the Small Chemical Businesses Division. This presentation provided an overview of trade secret protection, including a comparison to patent protection. Her presentation also addressed recent trade secret cases, including the Bimbo Bakeries English muffin case as well as various duPont-related lawsuits concerning Kevlar and trade secrets.
Kirby Drake is an active member of the American Chemical Society. She serves as Treasurer and Chair of the Younger Chemists Committee for the Dallas-Fort Worth Local Section. She also is a member of the Chemistry and the Law Section on a national level.
