What is “Sextortion”?

Sextortion

Law enforcement agencies are reporting a sharp rise in sextortion scams, a form of online extortion that exploits victims through stolen or coerced sexually explicit content. Because these schemes rely on fear, embarrassment, and anonymity, awareness remains one of the most effective tools for prevention.

  • Sextortion Relies on Deception, Coercion, and Continued Threats — Sextortion typically begins when scammers obtain explicit photos, videos, or screenshots through fake profiles, hacked accounts, or recorded video chats. Once the material is secured, victims are threatened with public distribution unless payment is made, often followed by repeated demands even after money is sent.

  • Online Platforms Increase Exposure and Complicate Enforcement — Social media, dating apps, online games, and video chat platforms make it easier for scammers to contact victims directly. Many sextortion operations have been traced to Southeast Asia and Africa, raising jurisdictional challenges and limiting law enforcement’s ability to identify and prosecute offenders.

  • Legal Protections Exist, but Public Awareness Remains Low — There is no federal sextortion statute, but many states have enacted laws addressing the crime. In Texas, sextortion is a felony punishable by fines and jail time. Despite these laws, victims often hesitate to report incidents due to embarrassment or the belief that legal remedies are ineffective.
