How to Protect Your Website From Domain Hijacking?
Protecting Your Website From Domain Hijacking
Domain hijacking, or domain “theft,” occurs when a third party improperly changes the registration of a domain name without the owner’s permission. Hijacked domains are often used to generate click-through revenue, extort the rightful owner, damage reputations, or support malicious activity. The impact can be severe: well-known victims have included the U.S. Marines, The New York Times, Google, Twitter, and Craigslist, and similar attacks continue to affect businesses of all sizes.
Recovering a Hijacked Domain Is Difficult and Costly — If a domain is hijacked, the first step is to immediately notify the registrar and attempt to reverse the unauthorized transfer. Even when successful, damages incurred during the hijacking period are rarely recoverable. Litigation or ICANN proceedings are available alternatives, but both can be expensive, time-consuming, and ineffective at protecting a business’s reputation in the short term.
Prevention Starts With Strong Registrar and Account Practices — Companies should choose reputable registrars, keep all contact information current, and use secure, limited-access credentials. Consolidating domains with a single registrar can simplify monitoring, while strong passwords and registrar locks can significantly reduce the likelihood of unauthorized changes.
Active Monitoring and Renewal Are Critical — Regularly reviewing domain registration details helps identify suspicious changes early. Domain expiration is one of the most common paths to hijacking, as expired domains can be quickly acquired by bad actors using automated tools. Renewing critical domains early and for longer terms is often the most effective and least expensive preventative measure.
