Shannon Bates serves as Moot Court Competition Judge
Klemchuk Kubasta LLP (KK LLP), a leading full-service intellectual property (IP) law firm, announces Shannon Bates, Executive Partner, served as an International Trademark Association (INTA) Saul Lefkowitz Moot Court Competition Judge for the Southwest Regional Oral Arguments on Saturday, February 8. This year’s topic involved whether the RIGGS ROCKER guitar of fictitious country-western icon Riggs Houston was entitled to trade dress protection based on its cowhide covering and star-shaped sound hole. Students were also asked to determine whether the miniature guitars manufactured by fictitious company Laredo Specialty Products were likely to cause confusion with and/or were counterfeits of that trade dress.
“It was an honor to serve as a judge for the inaugural Southwest Regional Moot Court Competition,” said Bates. “The students were so well prepared and many impressed the judges with trial lawyer-level oral advocacy skills. It was fascinating to be on this side of the court room. Congratulations to all teams that competed. The future of intellectual property law is in good hands.”
86 student teams from law schools throughout the country participated in five (5) regional competitions. In the Southwest Region, 4 panels of judges heard Oral Arguments from 11 student teams. 2 teams from each region advanced to the National Finals, to be held in Washington, D.C. on March 15.
Also serving on the panel with Bates was The Honorable Roy Payne of the Eastern District of Texas, Marshall Division and Paul Reilly of Baker Botts LLP.
