Escape Rooms: Productivity in the Workplace Gained By Team-Building Activity?

Escape Rooms: A Team Lesson in Communication

Escape Rooms: A Team Lesson in Communication

There is a new form of entertainment popping up across the country: Escape Rooms. It involves a group of players being trapped in a room for 45-90 minutes while solving a series of puzzles to accomplish a specific goal. Players are given clues that help them unlock tasks that guide them through multiple rooms, ultimately having them “escape” once they solve the initial question or goal. Recently, our Operations Team had the opportunity to try this as a team-building activity. In less than 90 minutes, our group followed clues, solved puzzles and riddles, found keys, and in the end, we escaped. (Pause for applause.)

It was a fun, interactive experience that brought our group closer together. In that short amount of time we had to communicate effectively with each other, perform well under pressure, and use each other’s strengths to solve the puzzles. You quickly learn that poor communication slows down the group’s progress and that working together gets you to the next clue faster.

Because teamwork is so critical to business success, team-building activities are vital. It enables better communication, better relationships, and ultimately increases productivity in the workplace. This is an effective and fun way to help your group build trust and increase collaboration, while providing intellectual stimulation and a bit of a thrill. After all, who doesn’t like mystery and puzzles?
