Electronic commerce, also known as eCommerce or e-commerce, is a term for any type of business or commercial transaction that involves the transfer of information, products, or services across computer networks such as the Internet.

eCommerce and IT

eCommerce draws on several different, existing technologies such as mobile payments, electronic funds transfer, Internet marketing, online transaction processing, electronic data interchange, and modern Internet coding to operate. Currently, the phrase“eCommerce” refers to many different business aspects. For example, eCommerce websites may refer to any of the following: online shopping websites for retail sales direct to consumers, online marketplaces where third parties may sell to consumers, business-to-business buying and selling, electronic data interchanges between businesses, marketing through social media use or other Internet means, and online flash sales. Due to the variance in the types of eCommerce businesses as well as their specific needs, eCommerce websites often encounter a number of different legal issues that span different fields of law (e.g., secure transactions, bankruptcy, Internet jurisdiction, etc.).

While the advent of the Internet has made online shopping and commerce particularly visible today, eCommerce has been around since the 1970s. Only recently, however, have federal guidelines been established for regulation of electronic commerce activities.
